Pre Treatment Care
One of the major benefits of Scalp Micropigmentation is the simple aftercare which requires little tono downtime! The procedural result from each treatment session will settle over a 7 day healingperiod. After this time you will generally be ready for the next session.
- To ensure optimal results from your treatment, it is crucial to avoid sun exposure in the days leading up to your appointment, particularly if you have a tendency to burn. A sensitive scalp may experience discomfort during the procedure and could reject pigment if sunburned; thus, rescheduling may be necessary.
- Any dry scalp conditions, including dandruff, eczema, or psoriasis, must be resolved prior to treatment, as compromised skin may hinder healing and pigment acceptance.
- Moisturising your scalp to prepare the skin for Micropigmentation is key and it is recommended to use a water based moisturiser before treatment and after the treatment is healed. Sugar scrubs or light exfoliation of the scalp are recommended before treatment to remove dead skin.
- If possible, remove wig units 7+ prior to treatment and give your scalp time to breath and clear up irritations to glue. If your skin is not in top condition we may need to reschedule your booking.
- If you are prone to keloid scarring or have any active and changing forms of Alopecia unfortunately Scalp Micropigmentation is not suitable for you.
- Clients with type 2 diabetes or those who have undergone chemotherapy in the past 12 months must obtain a doctor's clearance prior to proceeding
- For individuals using blood-thinning medications, a complete cessation is required for at least 30 days before starting treatment.
If you have any uncertainties regarding your general health or are dealing with unusual scalp conditions, it is advisable to seek a doctor’s clearance before beginning treatment.
Post Treatment Care
- Avoid excessive sweating for at least 2-4 days following your treatment.
- Refrain from exposing your scalp to direct sunlight during the healing process.
- Do not fully submerge your scalp in water for a minimum of 4 days post-treatment. For instance, when showering, avoid spraying water directly on your scalp. Consider using a shower cap if necessary. You may gently cleanse your scalp after the treatment with clean hands, wet wipes, or a damp paper towel. Avoid using soaps or shampoos during this period.
- Wear loose-fitting hats or hard hats after treatment while healing. However, it’s crucial to allow your skin to breathe as much as possible. Avoid beanies or tight hats that may cause friction or sweating for at least 5 days post-treatment.
- On day 5 post treatment you may gently wash your head as normal again, with WARM water, and no scrubbing. For bald heads, a light cleanser such as baby shampoo is recommended. Follow up by moisturising your scalp with a water based lotion or very light natural oil such as jojoba.
- Avoid using chemical-based products such as chemical colors, fibers, makeup, antibiotic creams, ointments, Minoxidil, or Retin-A to the treated area until it has completely healed. We suggest waiting at least 10 days after your final session, as these products may lead to discoloration or fading of the pigment.
- Protect your scalp from sunlight: During the healing process, do not expose your scalp to strong sunlight. For those with shaved heads, always apply sunscreen. We recommend staying out of intense sunlight for the first 7-10 days to avoid needing sunscreen on your treatment area; instead, consider wearing a hat. Avoid sunburning your scalp to the point of peeling, especially within the first two weeks post-treatment, as any sun damage causing peeling on the healing tattoo can result in fading and uneven results, even after complete healing.
- Wet shaving restrictions: Do not use a razor blade for wet shaving for 10 days following each session of the procedure.
- Keep your scalp moisturised with a water based moisturiser or light oil once your treatment has settled. This will help to keep the scalp in good condition & helps to extend the longevity of your SMP.
- Day 15: You can now resume your normal daily routine
Gentle care for the treated area: Avoid rubbing, picking, or scratching the treated area or any scabs that
may form, as this can lead to uneven healing and less defined impressions. If you experience itching,
gently tap the area instead.
LONG-TERM AFTERCARE:
Exfoliate your scalp at least 2 times a month to remove dead skin cells and maintain the appearance of the pigments.
Avoid chlorinated pools, saltwater, saunas, and steam rooms for 3 week after treatment
Always wear SPF 50+ as UV rays can cause the pigment to fade.
Avoid using products that use a high concentration of alcohol. To tell how much alcohol is in a product check the label. On the labels, ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration. If alcohol is one of the first ingredients it is best to avoid it.
Avoid products with AHA as this will cause pigment to fade.
Maintenance:
SMP is a long-lasting solution to hair loss, but it may require occasional touch-up sessions to maintain its appearance over time. The frequency of touch-up sessions will vary depending on factors such as skin type, lifestyle, and desired hair density.

To achieve a seamless transition, we always fade the tattoo about an inch into the existing hair.
If clients experience additional hair loss, we can easily touch up the affected area and blend it with the current SMP.
Do I have to shave my head?
If you have any completely bald areas on your scalp, the answer is generally: YES. We typically recommend shaving it down to a length of 0.5 to 1, as this is the most manageable length for our artists to work with. To achieve the best overall appearance, clients should maintain their shaved hair every 2 to 4 days to ensure a smooth transition between longer hair and the flat tattoo. For your convenience, we provide in-house shaving on the day of the treatment.
If a client has thinning hair and simply wants to add density, shaving is not required. This applies to women as well; there’s no need to shave your head since we can work between the hair strands.
How do I look after my SMP?
Aftercare is simple. Keep the area clean and dry, and avoid direct sunlight during healing. Avoid shampoos, chemicals, submerging your head under water, excessive sweating for at least 4 days after treatment. Loose fitting hats can beworn immediately after treatment but you must allow your head to breath. Apply sunscreen outdoors going forward toprolong the life your your SMP. Will it damage my existing hair follicles?
The needling of the micropigmentation stimulates the scalp and helps promote blood flow to the area so NO it doesnot damage existing hair follicles or prevent future growth for those considering hair transplants afterwards. In somecases it can even help to calm the appearance and discomfort of keloid scarring!
Does it hurt?
Most clients describe the pain from 2-5 out of 10, with the sensation being more of an annoying itch rather than feelingpainful. The front temples, hairline and sides of head tend to be the most painful because of the nerve endings inthose areas. Numbing cream is available for clients with very low pain tolerance.
How long will it take?
Each SMP treatment is done over 2-4 sessions. This is to ensure we gradually build up and blend the tattoo, adjust thedensity and ink colour to create the most natural results. Sessions generally run between 2-4 hours depending on thearea we need to cover.
The majority of our clients complete their full treatment within 2-6 weeks depending on the treatment type. Ourgeneral timeline for treatments is 7-14 days in between treatments and 1+ month in between your previous session andfinal follow up session.
We leave a longer time before your final session as your skin regenerates every 28 days and we always adjust yourtattoo based on healed results. This method ensures our clients have the most natural looking long term healedresults. Our artist will advise you otherwise based on your skin type.
